I know Christmas is over but.......

I saw this cool idea for a shabby chic-like Christmas ornament quite a while before Christmas and knew I wanted to give it a try.  My son's wedding was on Dec. 20th with an Open House at our home on the 27th so I wanted my tree to have a different feel than usual.

The original ornament I saw was modge podged using  German book pages.

This is the original that I "pinned"

It took me a while to figure out what to cover my ornaments with until I went with a friend to the Goodwill and she helped me pick out a fabulous dictionary!  The words were just the right size....small.    I purchased clear balls from Hobby Lobby to use (medium and large), only because I didn't have any the right size; the ones I had were too small and I didn't want to attempt to modge podge on tiny ornaments my first try.

The project actually took me hours, but I had a great time; I had the Hallmark Channel on and listened and watched Christmas movies during the process.  I don't have photos of the ornaments in progress, but it was quite simple: you need modge podge (or there are recipes making your own using glue and water), dictionary pages, a foam brush, ornaments to cover, spray glitter, and either glitter and/or small tinsel.

I just ripped dictionary pages into thin strips and proceeded to glue them onto the balls, making sure they were completely covered. (As was my dining room table along with my hands!)  I then sprayed them with glitter in a can; I picked silver.
I didn't add glitter around the rims until I took the ornaments down to store; I ran out of time!

this one has glitter around the silver part; I used elmer's glue and glitter

One with tinsel, one with glutter (I preferred the glitter)

I opted not to make tags; although I loved them, I wasn't sure how they would store and not get crumpled.

  1. Those are really cute Sharon, they look just like the original. I can see how time consuming they would be, especially depending on how many you make, but very creative!
