I was really excited when I saw this canvas craft and wanted to make something for Addeline's room. I am not very crafty, but thought this looked easy enough to do myself. I just finished it tonight and I am not too sure about it. I don't think it came out exactly how I envisioned it..but I may feel different tomarrow when I see it with fresh eyes.
You need: Canvas Board: I did a 16X20 and got a 2pack from hobby lobby
for $7.99
The vinyl lettering: I do not have a cricut or printer, so I bought 4"
Alphabet stencils for $4.99
Spray paint: I used matte finish in white.
Fabric: For mine I got 5/8 a yard which gave me 2 pieces of fabric that were 5/8
Staple Gun
Here is the Original
First: Staple your fabric to the canvas. I stapled both pieces of fabric down, thinking this would make it thicker and hopefully prevent any bleeding through from the spray paint.
Second: Figure out your saying and cut your letters out. I then taped them to the board--one site said they used spray glue and I am wondering if I had used that if it would have done better.
Then I spray painted the whole thing, doing multiple coats until I got the color I wanted.
I let it dry for about an hour and then peel off the letters, and this is what I came out with.
As you can maybe see--some of the paint got onto the fabric under the letters--I dont know if this is due to bleeding through or because I only taped down the letters and so they were not fully flat onto the fabric while I was painting. I would like to try this again, especially since I thought it would look better with the fabric showing through. I got fabric and the other canvas and was going to do something for our bedroom, but wanted to see how this one turned out. I am going to have to think about it first now and see if there is anything different I can do for it to come out better.
I think for this project you really need vinyl like it asks for, or something that really sticks to the fabric. I also think I will try this again, but change it by getting some vinyl letters and just stick them on top of the fabric and not paint.
Any thoughts/advice would be appreciated.
After looking at this post/pictures- I am realizing I think that what I don't fully like about this is that I don't get to see as much of the fabric as I like. I may like it more if I had done the opposite--either somehow applied white letters to the fabric instead of painting the whole thing white. Or, having a white canvas and making the letters out of the fabric intead..hmmm..
ReplyDeleteI like how it turned out; the only thing I might like a little better is if the letters were a little thicker? Thanks for showing the steps; makes more sense to me when I can see each one.
ReplyDeleteI'm impressed you did this. I'm not good with spray paint. great idea. I was going to say the same thing Sharon did about using wider letters, so you can see your material more, or maybe you could add more stencils like butterflies or hearts throughout. I think it's cute and would look cute in Addie's room.
